Councillors Write to Residents over Folkestone West Parking Scheme

Shepway’s parking consultation booklet

Two ward councillors have hand-delivered a letter to all residents in their ward who live near Folkestone West station to seek their views over Shepway’s proposed parking scheme. Cllr Rory Love and Cllr George Bunting have used their letter to outline their current thinking on twelve specific points relating to the residents’ parking scheme, and to invite comments from the people living in the roads that suffer from commuter parking.

The Harvey West ward councillors explain in the four page letter that they are seeking changes to the Council’s proposals on nine of the issues they have highlighted, and agree or partially agree with the Council on a further three. The main areas of disagreement are around the Council’s proposals to paint additional yellow lines on the roads, which Cllrs Love and Bunting see as unnecessary.

The councillors have invited comments in time for the Cabinet meeting on 29th July, when a decision will be made on whether to introduce the scheme, and if so, what the details will be.

Cllr Rory Love said:

“George Bunting and I have written to nearly 200 households in our ward; more, in fact, than the Council itself wrote to. We support residents’ ambitions to keep their roads free from commuter parking, and so agree with the principle of a residents’ parking scheme. However, we believe there should be changes to a number of details. We are inviting residents to have their say so we can accurately reflect their views when the Council makes its decision.”

The councillors’ letter was hand-delivered over the weekend of 27th to 28th June to Harvey West ward residents in Audley Road, Baldric Road, part of Bathurst Road, Broadfield Crescent, part of broadfield Road, Herdson Road, part of Shorncliffe Road, Wellfield Road, and Welson Road.
