Cllr Rory Love gained two major concessions from the Council's Development Control Committee on Tuesday 29th July as planning permission was agreed by the Committee for this controversial development.
Rory succeeded in providing more protection for trees around the site, and won support for preventing ‘contemporary’ style blocks of flats being built.
However, a succession of speakers failed to persuade the Committee that the development was over-intensive. Rory also failed to persuade the Committee to increase the number of shared-equity homes and reduce the number of social rented flats.
Although the Committee has agreed the development, a formal notice is unlikely to be issued for some time as the legally binding conditions need to be agreed.

Rory and George are supporting residents of the Metropole in opposing this change of use. Both councillors believe this is an innappropriate location for the proposed development. This is the set of plans that Cllr Rory Love spoke against on behalf of Plain Rd residents. The plan was refused by the Council’s Development Control committee on 29th November 2005. Since then, the developer has lodged an appeal. This appeal was heard by a Planning Inspector on behalf of the Secretary of State on Wednesday 25th October 2006 at the Civic Centre. Rory spoke at the Appeal Hearing, as did several residents. This was followed by a site visit. On 15th November, the Inspector announced his decision to dismiss the appeal.
Refused at the Development Control Committee meeting on Tuesday 29th November 2005. Rory spoke against the plan. (Refusal notice issued by Shepway District Council on 2nd December 2005.)
Appeal dismissed by the Planning Inspector on 15th November. The refusal of planning consent is therefore upheld.
